6. helianthus

there are dead sunflowers in the corner of your room, shriveled and dry where you left them days ago. nobody gave them to you. you took them. there was a vase in biology lab where you were studying angiosperms and you tore their florets away and dissected them with scalpels and squinted into microscopes to see their stamens and carpels and ovaries and when they were done you kept two and brought them home with you in the cold gray rain.

7. nineteen

pretty college girl, they like it when you wear red lipstick and black neckties and talk about carbonyls and organic chemistry. you wonder what they would think of your Halloween night, when your friends stole two pumpkins and a shopping cart from the supermarket and rode it all the way back to campus past midnight and you didn’t have a bottle opener so you learned to pop beer caps off with a screwdriver and a stiletto heel.

8. ocean beach

and there isn’t a gentle bone in your body that hasn’t thunder-cracked under the weight of oceans. it is a long weekend and the waves shine golden bright but you swim too deep and find a riptide to carry you away. all at once the shore is gone and you fight and you fight until you choke on salt and starlight and for the first time you think, my god, i don’t want to die. the Pacific does not care.

(fear is when the waves hold you down and you can’t feel the bottom anymore and there is nothing beneath your feet but silent empty sea.)
Notes to myself. Sometimes I feel it's important to keep track of these passing moments in my life, because I don't ever want to forget them.
